Author:
Huang Yueyuan (1880-1964), also known as Shan Qu Guan Sou, was born in Fenghua, Zhejiang Province. He was an authority on horticulture during the Republican period. In his early years, Huang Yueyuan joined the League in Japan, and in 1909, he bought 10 acres of land in Taoxi, Songbang, Zhenru, and ran the Huang’s livestock farm, which was known locally as the “Huang’s Garden”. During the Xinhai Revolution, he followed Chen Yingshi and served in the Shanghai Military Governor’s Office. Afterwards, he abandoned his political career and returned to his farm, and devoted himself to the study of horticulture. Before the War of Resistance against Japan, he held several exhibitions of large and small chrysanthemums in Huang’s garden in Zhenru, and won many gold and silver medals and shields from China and abroad. Huang De Lin (1905-2005) was the son of Huang Yue Yuan, an internationally renowned horticulturist. After the public-private partnership of “Huang Garden” in 1956, he became the representative of the private owner of Shanghai Flower and Tree Company in the western district. In 1959, he was transferred to Longhua Nursery as the chief technical director until his retirement.
